Veterans Day Assembly
Salem celebrated Veterans Day with an all school assembly. This year Salem worked with the Milwaukee Homeless Veterans Initiative by collecting personal and household items for homeless veterans. Kirsten Sobieski, a veteran and the director of MHVI, attended the assembly and spoke to students and staff on the challenges many veterans and their families face upon returning home from active duty. Adding to the assembly the Boy Scouts posted and retired the colors, the Star Spangled Banner was performed by 7th grade band and 7th and 8th grade choir, students from 8th grade recited poems and shared why we celebrate Veterans Day, and 4th grade students enthusiastically performed military songs from the different branches of the service. It was a heartfelt tribute to our veterans!
Ms. Sobieski, was touched by the over 800 thank you letters students wrote to veterans as well as the number of personal and household items donated by Salem. She commented on how many veterans her organization will help with the items Salem donated.
