Last week Ms. Straukas and her kindergarten class began growing butterflies! They have been learning all about the life cycle of a butterfly and are watching their own caterpillars transform in the classroom!🦋This weekend the pupa started to form and once they are all hanging at the top of their containers, they will need to be transferred within 24 hours into their habitat where they will continue to transform! Stay tuned! #butterflies #transformation #growing #lifecycle #kindergarten #salemschoolfalcons

Please help us congratulate Mrs. Wendi Upthagrove on her retirement at the end of this school year! She has been at Salem for 17 years, and an educator for 35 years...a lot longer if you count all of her childhood years when she used to bribe her little sister to play "school" with her! Of course, Wendi always had to be the teacher! She started her career in 1986 at Paris where she was for 18 years before taking a year off to stay home with her baby. She thinks it's kind of cool that she has spent her entire career between two schools, although she did split time between Paris and Brighton her first two years! Her initial response to what she's looking forward to most in retirement was "not having to worry about driving in the winter!" Actually, though, she is looking forward to reading for fun and spending winters in a warm place with beaches, palm trees and friends! Without a doubt, she will miss her students the most! She will miss helping them achieve goals and seeing the satisfaction on their faces after seeing their hard work pay off! She will miss their humor and sincerity and company more than they will ever know! Wendi says it has been an honor and a pleasure working with all of them. She says, "I am so fortunate to have spent the past 35+ years working with an amazing group of educators! Your support, guidance and friendship has meant the world to me! To the students and families that I have worked with throughout the years, I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to work with you! I cherish the memories!" Please help us congratulate Ms. Terry Borndahl on her retirement at the end of this school year! Ms. Borndahl has been in education for 28 years, starting out by subbing and volunteering in the library before becoming employed by Salem School. Through Salem School she got to experience many great things in her life. A staff member years before Terry was working here (her kids all went to Salem) suggested that she should be the parent outreach worker for the Alcohol and Other Drug Council of Kenosha County. She worked for the FAST Program, Family and Schools Together, and it changed her life . She later became facilitator of the program and went to many schools in Kenosha County facilitating the program. Terry was also on the Salem PTO when it first got started so many years ago. She also helped coach the Battle of the Books, and did so for many years assisting and then as the leader. Salem even hosted the competition for a couple years. She says she is kind of a quiet person but while hosting BOB, she had to speak to a few hundred people in the gym! She never thought she could ever do that! There are so many more experiences she could list! During retirement she plans to work on an Accounting degree and do some traveling and gardening. She is also looking forward to spending time with her family, her animals, her three dogs and volunteering at Valley of the Kings Animal Sanctuary. She will miss the kids and the staff here at Salem, such great friends and great memories! 4K students in Mrs. Trescott and Mrs. Borkowski's classroom "shopped" through newspapers and magazines to find food to put in their refrigerators! They searched for food photos, cut them out and then glued them "into" their fridge. Their goal was to find foods that would make them healthy and strong!

Please help us congratulate Mrs. Judy Mroczkowski on her retirement at the end of this school year! She has been in education for 22 years in the school system, but developed curriculum for several publishers 16 years prior to that. She has been with us at Salem for 3 years, and will miss the children and the families most when she retires! Her family purchased a lake home to enjoy during retirement and she's looking very forward to coffee on the dock, morning pontoon cruises, and watching the sunset from her porch swing! She looks forward to waking up each day and not having a plan! Judy currently has 2 grandchildren and she looks forward to many, many more. She says, " I would like to thank and recognize my team - some of the best professionals I've had the pleasure of working with. They have gone above and beyond for many of our families during the pandemic and I cannot think of going through those difficult times with anyone else." Please help us congratulate Ms. Sue Gigliotti on her retirement at the end of this school year! Sue has been working at Salem School for about 27 years, and prior to that worked in the lunch program in Germantown School District. When her children were little she began by volunteering here at Salem, and then eventually subbed in the library before she was offered a job. During retirement she is looking very forward to spending more time with her family (7 grandchildren, her 3 children, and her mom and siblings) and enjoying the birds and nature, reading, and trying new recipes! She will truly miss her co-workers and working with and helping students! Please help us congratulate Mrs. Ann Hughes on her retirement at the end of this school year! Ann has been a licensed teacher since 2011, and has been teaching at Salem full time since 2015. She is going to greatly miss the Salem staff and being part of the "light-bulb" moments that her students experience! When she retires she is looking most forward to having the flexibility to spend time with her whole family! She would like to thank Salem School (administration, staff, parents, and students) for the many opportunities she has had here. It is all of these special opportunities that she was given that led to her becoming a teacher in the first place. She wants to send a special thank you to Mrs. Stanek for allowing her the many opportunities (every Friday for many, many years) to volunteer in her classroom, as well as a thank you to Mrs. Luengen for allowing her to student teach under her guidance, and her 7th grade team for always being there for her (on great days and not-so-great days). She says, "You are all such a special group of people doing the hardest job on this planet. Keep up the fantastic work. Thank You!!!"
